Twitter Applications Mac

How to close applications on a Mac?
So, this is a really stupid, newb question, but this is my second day from a PC to a Mac so I just want to make sure I’m doing everything right and I’m working everything right. Okay, so I’ve noticed when I’m on safari, itunes, ect… I lick “x” to exit out of the screen. Well then when I click on it again, it pops right back up and it’s like I never left the page (example: it keeps me signed into my twitter and myspace accounts). I do notice, when, for example, if I go onto safari, I can click on the safari button and click “quit” and then it for sure exits out of the application.
So is clicking x or quit better? I hear if you let applications run like that, it could cause your computer to crash :
So please help this newb out lol.
Apple/Command/Sqigggly lines (Where the windows button is on a PC) + ‘Q’ and y the hell would u use a mac? throw it out now!!!
